A community, which ran one of the boldest and most effective campaigns of the 1980s, presents the remarkable story of the fight to save its homes.

This one-foot square hanging wall calendar for 2026 marks the 40th year since the fight began that led to the creation of the UK’s largest and most valuable community-owned housing association.

Into the Lion’s Den tells a classic tale of the poor and oppressed confronting the rich and powerful, led by cheeky champion, the Walterton & Elgin Action Group (WEAG).

Photos record the campaign bursting into life. Along the way, WEAG recruits the Iron Man, cracks wry jokes, and sings to its enemies, all the while dodging the Police as it knocks out one threat after another.

Action-packed throughout, Into the Lion’s Den is moving, entertaining, and, above all, humorous.

Told by the WEAG Coordinator, Jonathan Rosenberg, from his contemporaneous account, the stories are illustrated by top quality images, from the iconic Iron Man to striking photos and witty cartoons.

Covering the first half of the campaign between 1985 and 1988, the narrative takes a hair-raising turn when it fuses with the notorious Homes for Votes scandal, which culminated in Dame Shirley Porter paying £12 million for misusing Westminster Council’s resources.

Into the Lion’s Den depicts the very moment the developers surrendered. WEAG’s victory laid the foundations for its community to force the richest and most powerful council in the land to hand over 921 homes for nothing, and pay it £22 million.

“WECH’s story demonstrates that through collective effort and persistent advocacy, ordinary people have the power to effect extraordinary change. Into the Lion’s Den brings to life a heart-warming, inspiring, and human story through great art and design. This socio-cultural endeavour is a testament to the resilience and spirit of a community in its time.”
